JUST STARTING OUT ON ANIMAL CROSSING NEW HORIZONS? THE THINGS WE WISH WE KNEW FROM DAY 1

We’re not newbies to Animal Crossing here at MODAN, but every new game brings with it its different ways of playing – and some are exactly the same. If you are a little late to the table (by just over a year, no less), then we’ve got you. Read on for some tips and tricks you’ll want to know.

Money trees will make you lots of bells, but patience is key

When you see a glowing light coming out of the ground, it means there is a bag of money underneath. Once you dig it up with a shovel, the hole will glow. In the early days, you may have to just rebury the 1,000 bell bag, but once you accumulate some bells in your pocket, bury 10,000 bells instead. Why? 1,000 bells will grow you a 3,000 bell tree. 10,000 bells will grow you a 30,000 bell tree. Soon enough you’ll be able to pay off loans and buy expensive items.

Speaking of money, there will be a money rock every day

There are a number of rocks on your island to collect clay, iron and stone from, however, one of these rocks will produce bells. Handy if you want money, not so handy when you need iron…

FYI, the money rock will probably not be the same rock the following day – it’s random!

Back to those trees again. Shaking trees will produce items, but also – watch out!

There are a number of hidden items in trees such as bell coins, an item of furniture, twigs, and insects, one of them being the mighty bees! They will sting, but the trick is to have your net handy when shaking trees. This means that if the bees appear, you can swipe them into your net instead of getting stung. Easier said than done, however…

The first sting will give you a swollen eye, but a second sting? You’ll faint and end up back home. So, remember to either create or buy medicine!

Struggling to pay off that second loan?

The first loan is easier to pay off (with Nook Miles) but includes a lot of grafting, but, then again, you wouldn’t be playing Animal Crossing in the first place if you weren’t in the mood to graft. With the second loan, it’s actual bells and at first 98,000 seems like a huge sum, but once these loans keep going up, you’ll realise it was nothing.

There are many simple ways to make money, such as money trees, rocks, and selling items. At first, selling items might seem slow, but it all adds up. Sell fruit, especially different kinds which you can find on other islands using a Nook Miles Ticket or via friends giving them to you. It’ll be helpful to also use the fruit to grow your own trees – the more, the better! You can also sell furniture items, shells off the beach, insects and fish – but do please give the first one caught to dear, old Blathers.

What’s the point of paying off these loans? Well, you’ll get more rooms in your house and have extra storage space, which, trust us, you’ll need.

Travel to other islands and explore

One of the cool things about ACNH is finding unique islands such as the tarantula/scorpion island and money island. Tarantulas and scorpions are real money makers, especially when sold to Flick who’ll buy them for a lot more than Timmy and Tommy. The money island will have a bunch of rocks that produce only bells. You’ll be rich in no time!

The trick to catching a tarantula or scorpion

Trying to catch one can result in getting stung and fainting, and that’s never fun! These critters will spawn randomly after 7pm on your own island, and as mentioned before, will get you serious bells. So, what’s the trick? Press and hold A and move slowly towards it, stopping when it raises its pincers at you. Once down, move forward again, stop and repeat, until finally you can release A and swipe it with your net. Easy!

Also, if you don’t have the net in your hand, the tarantula/scorpion won’t seem so interested in you. It’s only when you do hold the net that it gives you its attention and may sting you.

How to receive a photo from a villager

There’s something magical about a villager who gives you their photo. To receive such an item, which is basically the ultimate in friendship goals in the game, tasks have to be completed. That could be finding a bug, or letting them sell items to you. The more of a friend you are, the different tasks you get.

A simple yet effective way to earn points is to give a fossil as a present, especially seeing as you will end up getting a lot of repeats. To find out more about the points system, look here. One day, instead of pajamas or a vacuum, you will receive their photo.

How to get rid of too much fruit

Eating fruit in the game (pears, oranges, peaches, apples or cherries) gives your character extra strength, meaning you can do things such as break rocks and pick up trees. Obviously, you don’t want to be full of fruit and accidently hit a rock, so how do you get rid of unwanted fruit in the system? Easy! Use a toilet. Pretty simple, right?

There are ways to speed up the game…

Sometimes it can be a chore to play through long dialogue and see out the game in real-time, though the latter is why it makes the game so special. But even so, changing the pace of the game can also have its perks. Here are a few ways to do just that:

  • Pressing B (instead of A) whilst an NPC/villager is talking will make their speech text appear in chunks, meaning you can skip through it quicker. It’s especially handy when reading repeated dialogue.
  • When crafting an item, hitting A will make your character craft the item a lot faster. It doesn’t seem like the biggest tip in the world, but is very handy!
  • Pressing B also makes your character run. This might sound like a no brainer, but you’ll be surprised at how many people didn’t know this for a very long time…
  • Time travelling. You’re either a time traveller or not, but either way, it can bring more enjoyment to the game for you if you wish to do so. Instead of waiting for each new day in real-time, changing the time and date on your Nintendo Switch will mean you can go through the days quicker without having to wait. Do keep in mind that it can mess things up, such as repeated noticeboard notifications, letters, events etc. And if you buy something from the shop, travel back and land on that date again in the future, the item in your shop won’t be there.

There are plenty more tips and tricks as you go along in the game, but it’s so much fun to find things out for yourself. Happy playing!
